RECENT LOCAL UPDATES AS OF 10-7-20 . . .

UNK has expanded with the opening of Discovery Hall, which aims to help fill jobs in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math career fields in Nebraska. The new $30 million facility replaces Otto Olsen, which was built in 1955. UNK’s Discovery Hall is to be the bridge needed to replace gaps in STEM employment in Nebraska. UNK anticipates more students will begin gravitating toward their campus due to the new facilities.

Eighteen teachers were awarded with funds in support of agricultural education and FFA programs by the Nebraska Farm Bureau Foundation. Recipients are all agricultural education teachers in their first through fifth year of teaching. Teachers are eligible for increasing awards each year. The 18 recipients of the scholarships include local teachers:

  • Jacob Goldfuss, Sandy Creek Public Schools
  • Kate Grimes, Axtell Community Schools
  • Cale Harrington, Loup City Public Schools
  • Blair Hartman, Ansley Public Schools
  • Hannah Horak, Shelton High School
  • Katie Horning, Northwest Public Schools
  • Brian Johnson, Litchfield Public Schools
  • Macie Wippel, Minden Public Schools

The mission of the Nebraska Farm Bureau Foundation is to engage youth, educators and the general public to promote an understanding of the vital importance of agriculture in the lives of all Nebraskans.

GOOD NEWS & VIEWS BEYOND THE GOOD LIFE . . .

A guy from Michigan took part in something called the “Great Grass Race” this summer, where people race across the country on riding mowers. But they don’t bring money or food, so they rely on random people to help them out along the way. He made it all the way from L.A. to Tampa. And even with the pandemic, he says he was, quote, “brought to tears a bunch of times, because of the good nature of people.”

Thousands of Disney park employees got laid off last week because of the pandemic.  So two fans who run a site called the Disney Tourist Blog started a food bank fundraiser that pulled in over $50,000 to help them out.  They say it should pay for around 200,000 meals.

A 102-year-old woman in Chicago named Bea Lumpkin wore a hazmat helmet to go drop off her vote-by-mail ballot the other day.  She made her grandson post a photo on Instagram to encourage people to vote.  She says if she’s willing to, quote, “face a pandemic [to vote], nobody should have an excuse.”

If I could come out at the age of 102 and face a pandemic [to vote], nobody should have an excuse,” Bea Lumpkin, of Chicago, told @GMA.https://t.co/68oxkZepQz
