STORM WIN OVERTIME THRILLER TO START SEASON

The Tri-City Storm posted a 3-2 overtime season-opening victory over the Dubuque Fighting Saints to begin play in the 2021-2022 season. Gavin Brindley scored two goals for the Storm, including the game-winning goal in overtime.

The Storm hit the ice again on Friday in a neutral site game against the Madison Capitols. Puck drop for the game is scheduled for 11:00 AM.

 

BEARCAT FOOTBALL – READY FOR TOUGH TEST AGAINST BELLEVUE WEST

The Kearney Bearcat Football team looks to find success again after dropping their second road game of the year last week to Millard West.


District play starts tonight and it does not get any easier as Bellevue West returns to Kearney. Head Coach Brandon Cool adds that there isn’t much to carry over from last year’s contests…

This will be the third time in a calendar year that the Thunderbirds and Bearcats have squared off, as Kearney won a thrilling 41-40 overtime win in the playoffs last season.

 

BEARCAT FOOTBALL – NOTHING TO LOSE

The Kearney High Football team prepares for a rematch against recent rival Bellevue West Friday night. The Bearcats upset the Thunderbirds in last season’s playoffs. 

Head Coach Brandon Cool adds that his team is ready to go once again as the underdogs… 

The Bearcats and Thunderbirds kick off tonight at 7 PM from Ron and Carol Cope Stadium as pregame coverage starts at 6:30 PM on KGFW.

 

KEARNEY CATHOLIC FOOTBALL – KEEPING WINNING STREAK GOING

The Stars host one of the best records in Class C-1 currently at 4-0 and begin district play against Minden at home Friday night. 

Head Coach Rashawn Harvey adds that his team is just focused on the district opponent and wanting to get off on the right foot…

The Stars are in the Top 3 in power points currently. Friday night is also Homecoming at Kearney Catholic. Kickoff between the Stars and Whippets is set for 7 PM.

 

FROST – OFFENSIVE LINE CANNOT BE AFFECTED BY CROWD

Nebraska Head Coach Scott Frost had his media session after Thursday’s practice. 

Frost was asked if the offensive line is ready for another big crowd on the road…

The Huskers offensive line had 7 penalties called against it in last week’s loss to Oklahoma. 

 

FROST – OFFENSIVE LINE NEEDS TO BE LOCKED IN

Head Coach Scott Frost mentioned that his offensive line had a good week of practice and is looking forward to seeing more improvement this week against Michigan State…

Frost and the Huskers travel to Michigan State to take on the Spartans with kickoff set for 6 PM.

 

FROST – ANOTHER GOOD WEEK OF PRACTICE

Head Coach Scott Frost kicked off his weekly press conference after Thursday’s practice that it was another successful rehearsal for his team…

The Huskers will travel to Michigan State Friday afternoon and will have a walkthrough before the contest kicking off at 6 PM.

 

FROST – CONFIDENCE IN KICKING GAME

Head Coach Scott Frost was asked about the struggling kicking game of the Huskers so far this season. Frost mentioned that he still remains confident his returning Big Ten Kicker of the Year can return to form…

So far this season, Culp is 3 of 8 on field goal opportunities and 13 of 16 on extra point tries. Culp did hit a career long kick last week against Oklahoma of 51 yards. 

 

FROST – MUST STOP MICHIGAN STATE’S RUNNING GAME

Head Coach Scott Frost was asked about what piece of the Spartan offense must be stopped to earn a Husker win on Saturday. Frost mentioned he has been impressed by Spartan Running back Kenneth Walker… 

Walker leads all rushers in the FBS in total yardage.

 

FROST – TAYLOR-BRITT WILL MAKE PLAYS

Cornerback Cam Taylor-Britt has yet to make a big splash play for the Blackshirts this season, but Head Coach Scott Frost isn’t worried about his star. He adds that Taylor-Britt will need to patient and the opportunities will come…

Taylor-Britt has 10 total tackles on the season but hasn’t yet created a turnover. 

 

KNAPTON NAMED NCAA WOMAN OF THE YEAR FINALIST

Nebraska 2021 Female Student-Athlete of the Year Abigail Knapton was named one of 30 finalists for the NCAA Woman of the Year award on Thursday.

A six-time Husker diving All-American, and the 2021 Big Ten Diver of the Meet, Knapton was also Nebraska’s Best Female Athlete award winner across all sports in 2020-21

On Nov. 9, during a virtual awards ceremony, the Top 30 honorees will be celebrated, and the NCAA Woman of the Year will be named.

 

HUSKER FOOTBALL OPENS THREE GAME TICKET PACKAGE

With five more games in Memorial Stadium this season for the Nebraska Football team, the Huskers have opened a new three game mini plan for fans to attend contests. 

The three game plan allows fans to select three of the five upcoming Big Ten contests for a total of $195 for one ticket to each contest. 

Games in the plan include Northwestern on Oct. 2, Michigan on Oct. 9, Purdue on Oct. 30, Ohio State on Nov. 6, and Iowa on Friday, Nov. 26.

UNK PREPARES FOR HIGH SCHOOL TRACK INVITE MONDAY

The annual UNK High School Cross Country Invitational will be held on Monday (Sept. 27) at the Kearney Country Club.

The meet allows teams from around Nebraska a chance to run the state championship course. Around 130 schools and close to 2,000 runners are expected to take part this year. This year’s state meet is Oct. 23rd.

Admission is $7 for adults and $5 for students and senior citizens (10 & under free). All proceeds go to benefit UNK cross country and track.
