NEWS OF THE WEIRD

Thanks to the pandemic, there’s a shopping mall Santa shortage ahead of the holidays.  The website HireSanta.com says they’re getting more requests than they can handle.  So Santa might not make it to as many malls this year.

A woman in New York is going viral after telling the story of how a bout of diarrhea helped her run her fastest MARATHON.  It happened at the Philadelphia Marathon in 2014.  She kept sprinting to the next port-a-potty . . . made NINE stops in the first 16 miles . . . and finished in 3 hours and 38 minutes.

Here’s a photo of her after the race.

It’s International Tongue Twister Day! Can You Say These Without Messing Up?

It’s International Tongue Twister Day, and you know we’re always up for a challenge.  So we here’s a list of some of the HARDEST tongue twisters.  We’ll start with a few of the easier ones, and then they’ll get harder . . .

  1. “She sells seashells by the seashore.”
  2. “He threw three free throws.”
  3. “Betty bought a bit of butter. But the butter Betty bought was bitter.  So Betty bought a better butter, and it was better than the butter Betty bought before.”
  4. “Is it harder to toot, or to tutor two tooters to toot?”
  5. “I like New York, unique New York, I like unique New York.”
  6. Try to say this one even TWO times fast: “Scissors sizzle, thistles sizzle.”
  7. “Fred fed Ted bread and Ted fed Fred bread.”
  8. “A skunk sat on a stump and thunk the stump stunk, but the stump thunk the skunk stunk.”
  9. “A synonym for cinnamon is a cinnamon synonym.”
  10. Now that we’re warmed up: The Guinness Book of World Records once claimed this was the HARDEST tongue twister:  “The sixth sick sheik’s sixth sheep’s sick.”  (Be careful you don’t slip in an accidental S-word with that one!)

But according to researchers at M.I.T., this one might actually be harder:  “Pad kid poured curd pulled cod.”

A Cup of Coffee Every Four Hours Could Stave Off “Seasonal Affective Disorder”

Daylight Saving Time just ended, and the days are getting shorter.  That means we’ll get less and less sunlight, which can bring on symptoms of “SAD,” or “Seasonal Affective Disorder.”  But a new poll found more COFFEE might help.

The study was funded by a bunch of coffee companies, so keep that in mind.  They claim it was fair and unbiased, but who knows.

It found that as the days get shorter and colder, 21% of us feel more anxious . . . 24% find it harder to concentrate . . . 25% feel less motivated to exercise . . . and 28% are more likely to feel sad in general.

A lot of people in the survey said coffee seems to HELP with those issues though.

21% said it helps them concentrate . . . 20% said it improves their mood in general . . . and 29% said they drink coffee to feel more energetic.

The study didn’t look at exactly how much coffee the average person should drink.  But a study in 2010 suggested that one cup every four hours could make a difference.
