Tuesday Afternoon Sports – Runza Seniors Season Ends to North Platte, POST 52 Wraps Up Districts, Bill Busch Comments from Sports Nightly, Husker Women’s Basketball to Face Kansas, Tuesday Sports Schedule

Jul 19, 2022 | 2:22 PM

RUNZA SENIORS SEASON ENDS IN HASTINGS, FALLING TO NORTH PLATTE:

A stretch of errors mixed with four runs given up in the first inning doomed the Runza Seniors from the start as Kearney could not keep pace with the FNBO Nationals of North Platte, ending their season in the A7 District tournament with an 8-0 loss.

The loss ends Kearney’s season at 18-20 overall.

POST 52 WRAPS UP DISTRICTS WITH LOSS TO HASTINGS:

The POST 52 Kearney Juniors were aiming to battle through the district tournament, but ended falling short in the A7 Juniors District Tournament in Lexington with a loss to Hastings Johnson Imperial Homes 6-3.

The loss does not mean the end, however, as the POST 52 Juniors will host the Juniors State Tournament throughout the weekend. As a host site, POST 52 is granted a spot in the tournament. Seeding is expected to be announced on Wednesday.

BILL BUSCH SPORTS NIGHTLY COMMENTS:

BUSCH – LOOKING FOR AN ACCURATE KICKER:

Special Team coach Bill Busch joined the Sports Nightly crew last night and spoke about what he looks for in qualities for a place kicker…

Last season, Husker kickers went a combined 8-16 for field goal attempts.

BUSCH – BLEEKRODE BRINGS STEADINESS TO KICKER:

The Husker football team hit the transfer portal early and often this summer, bringing in numerous players at different positions. Special Teams coordinator Bill Busch described what he was looking for in the portal…

Timmy Bleekrode is aiming to compete for the number one spot at kicker this fall, as the Furman transfer comes in with three years of eligibility remaining.

BUSCH – BUSCHINI THE GUY HEADING INTO THE FALL:

Special Teams coordinator for the Huskers Bill Busch joined Sports Nightly Monday night to talk about the third phase of the game that has haunted Nebraska throughout Scott Frost’s tenure. Busch did add that he’s excited to announce his new number one punter…

Buschini transfers in from Montana and was a full participant in spring practices, booming a 60 plus yard punt in the Red-White Spring game.

BUSCH – PALMER EXCITING AND RELIABLE ON RETURNS:

A big question mark entering the off-season for Nebraska Football was the special teams return game. Bill Busch, special teams coordinator, joined Sports Nightly on Monday and reaffirmed that LSU transfer Trey Palmer is the guy he trusts…

Palmer had a return score on kick return in his tenure at LSU.

HUSKER WOMEN’S BASKETBALL FACES KANSAS IN LINCOLN:

The Nebraska women’s basketball team will face an old foe in its 2022-23 regular-season non-conference finale, when the Huskers play host to Kansas at Pinnacle Bank Arena on Wednesday, Dec. 21.

The game, which will feature a pair of 2022 NCAA Tournament teams, will mark the second trip to Lincoln for the Jayhawks since Nebraska left the Big 12 Conference following the 2010-11 season.  The Huskers defeated Kansas, 58-52, on Dec. 5, 2018.

Kansas is coming off a 21-10 season that included an 11-7 Big 12 mark and culminated with a trip to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

HUSKERS’ NELSON, NEWSOME, AND VOKOLEK REPRESENT NEBRASKA AT BIG TEN MEDIA DAYS:

Scott Frost will be joined by three Husker standouts in Indianapolis for Big Ten media days next week.

Junior defensive back Quinton Newsome, junior outside linebacker Garrett Nelson and senior tight end Travis Vokolek are set to represent Nebraska at Lucas Oil Stadium for the conference’s annual kickoff event on July 26 and 27.

The Huskers will talk to the media on day 1 of the event, July 26.

Nebraska will open the season against Northwestern on Aug. 27. The game will be played in Ireland and kickoff is set for 11:30 a.m.
