NEBRASKA WOMEN’S HOOPS DOWNS WYOMING AT PBA:

Alexis Markowski produced her fourth double-double of the season and Maggie Mendelson made a strong impression in her Nebraska women’s basketball debut, as the Huskers pulled away from Wyoming in a 66-39 win at Pinnacle Bank Arena on Sunday afternoon.

Markowski finished with game highs of 22 points and 10 rebounds while notching three blocks to power the Huskers.

Nebraska’s victory marked the 500th home win in the history of the program.

Nebraska returns to action on Wednesday, Dec. 21, when the Huskers host unbeaten and No. 22 Kansas at Pinnacle Bank Arena. The contest will be broadcast across the Huskers Radio Network and KGFW.

ELECTRIC WORLD CUP FINALE ENDS IN MESSI CELEBRATION:

Lionel Messi kissed the World Cup trophy and celebrated with his teammates after an electrifying finish to the finale of the World Cup Tournament Sunday afternoon.

In probably the wildest final in the tournament’s 92-year history, Argentina won its third World Cup title by beating France 4-2 in a penalty shootout after a 3-3 draw featuring two goals from the 35-year-old Messi and a hat trick by his heir apparent, France forward Kylian Mbappé.

Amid the chaos inside Lusail Stadium, Mbappé did all he could to emulate Brazil great Pelé as a champion at his first two World Cups. Even scoring the first hat trick in a final since Geoff Hurst for England in 1966.

HUSKER MEN FALL TO K-STATE IN COLD SHOOTING PERFORMANCE:

Wilhelm Breidenbach had a career-high 13 points off the bench, while Nebraska’s second-half comeback fell short in a 71-56 loss to Kansas State Saturday night in the T-Mobile Center.

Breidenbach hit 5-of-9 shots from the field and grabbed five rebounds, as he and freshman Jamarques Lawrence keyed a strong bench effort that helped the Huskers rally after falling behind 59-40 with just under nine minutes remaining.

Kansas State (10-1) was led by Keyontae Johnson, who finished with a game high 23 points and 11 rebounds to pace four Wildcats in double figures. The Wildcats forced 18 Husker turnovers and held NU to 32.1 percent shooting for the day.

The Huskers return to action on Tuesday evening, as they take on Queens University in the first Battle in the Vault. Tipoff is set for 6:30 p.m. Pregame of the contest can be heard on KGFW beginning at 5:30 PM.

RHULE CONTINUES HOT RECRUITING START FOR HUSKER FOOTBALL:

It was a big weekend of commitments for Matt Rhule’s staff the past few days as many fresh faces announced their intent to sign with the Big Red.

Friday began with one of the most prolific kickers in Nebraska State High School Football history, Tristan Alvano, signing with the Huskers after his five field goal championship performance a month ago to notch an Omaha Westside state championship.

Saturday, the Warriors continued their Husker push with speedy receiver Jaylen Lloyd committing to Nebraska Football and Track & Field.

Additionally, three-star safety out of Philadelphia Rahmir Stewart announced his commitment.

Florida safety Corey Collier declared his intentions to transfer from Gainesville to Lincoln as well.

Full details available on all signings, transfers, and news on the Huskers can be found at the Husker Feed on KGFW.com.

GEORGIA TECH QUARTERBACK SET TO TRANSFER TO BIG RED:

Georgia Tech quarterback Jeff Sims announced his commitment to the Huskers on Sunday.

Sims has played in 24 games, making 23 starts over his career. He’s completed 364-of-633 passes for 4,464 yards, 30 touchdowns and 23 interceptions. On the ground, he’s rushed for 1,152 yards and 11 touchdowns on 277 attempts.

Sims played his college ball for Geoff Collins at Georgia Tech, who succeeded NU head coach Matt Rhule when he left Temple for Baylor.

2022’s starter Casey Thompson has not officially made a decision on whether he will return with the Big Red.

LOPER BASKETBALL FINISHES SEMESTER WITH SPLIT SUNDAY AT HSC:

The Loper Women’s basketball team dominated another conference contest while the men fell to their third ranked opponent to split their Sunday afternoon matchups at the Health & Sports Center.

The 26th/30th-ranked Nebraska Kearney women’s basketball team got a double double from forward Shiloh McCool and shot 49 percent from the field dominate Central Oklahoma, 73-52. UNK enters Winter Break at 12-2 (5-1)

Meanwhile, the 11th-ranked Central Oklahoma Bronchos got big efforts from Division I transfer Curtis Haywood II and junior guard Jaden Wells to pull away from Nebraska Kearney, 62-53.

Both teams are off until December 31 with contests against Lincoln.

UNK WRESTLING EARNS TWO WINS TO END SEMESTER:

The second-ranked Nebraska Kearney wrestling team rolled past eighth-ranked Augustana, 31-14, and York University, 50-3, Saturday afternoon at the Health & Sports Center.

This winter triangular wrapped up the fall semester for the Lopers (3-0). They are now off until the NWCA National Duals (Jan. 6-7) and the Hastings Open (Jan. 7).

STORM PULL OUT WIN OVER STARS ON TEDDY BEAR NIGHT:

The Tri-City Storm won Saturday night’s Teddy Bear Toss game against the Lincoln Stars at the Viaero Center by a final score of 5-2.

Daimon Gardner, Graham Gamache, Dane Dowiak, Cale Ashcroft, and Samo Meritähti each netted a goal in the victory for Tri-City. Cameron Korpi notched the win in net for Tri-City in his debut game with the team.

The Storm will return to action following the USHL’s holiday break on December 31st in a New Year’s Eve matchup against the Stars.
