KEARNEY BASKETBALL POSTPONED TO FRIDAY DUE TO SNOW:

The Kearney High Basketball teams will await another day to wrap up their regular season as the winter storm crossing the state of Nebraska canceled all classes and activities for Lincoln Public Schools for Thursday.

The Bearcats will face the Silverhawks on Friday night with the same times as the previously scheduled matchups.

The Kearney girls begin the doubleheader with KGFW’s pregame starting at 5:30 PM with tip-off set for 5:45. The Bearcat boys contest will follow.

Hear the games on 1340 KGFW, 96.1 FM, on the free KGFW mobile app, and online at KGFW.com with Austin Jacobsen on the call.

NEBRASKA FOOTBALL ROSTER ADJUSTMENTS; BROWN AND ANTHONY NO LONGER WITH TEAM:

A pair of scholarship players are no longer listed on Nebraska’s official roster.

Wide receiver Alante Brown is not currently enrolled at Nebraska this semester and not with the football team, leaving his long-term status with the program undetermined.

Brown appeared in every game last season for the Huskers, making 10 starts at wide receiver and catching 16 passes for 191 yards. That followed a freshman season in 2021 where Brown made 10 appearances and caught three passes for 30 yards.

Reserve offensive tackle Hunter Anthony is no longer with the program. Anthony joined Nebraska prior to the 2022 season as a graduate transfer from Oklahoma State.

Nebraska ended national signing day with more than 100 scholarship players listed on its roster and will need to trim down to 85 by the time fall camp opens in August.

SHELLEY’S BIG DAY NOT ENOUGH TO OVERCOME LOWLY MINNESOTA:

Jaz Shelley scored 28 of her career-high 37 points in the second half, but Minnesota got a three-pointer in the corner with 1.1 seconds left to escape with a 95-92 women’s basketball win over Nebraska on Wednesday night.

The Huskers (14-12, 6-9 Big Ten) suffered their third straight loss, while Minnesota (10-16, 3-12 Big Ten) got its first home victory of 2023 thanks to a game-winning three-pointer from Isabelle Gradwell.

Shelley’s performance for Nebraska included 17 in the fourth quarter, including four three-pointers.

The Huskers return home to take on No. 7 Iowa on Saturday. Tip-off at Pinnacle Bank Arena is set for 1 p.m.

LOPER WOMEN’S HOOPS UP TO TENTH IN POLLS; CLAIM SPOT IN FIRST REGION RANKINGS:

The Nebraska Kearney women’s basketball team is in the inaugural NCAA Region Rankings for the 2022-23 season.

These rankings determine the 64-team NCAA Division II Tournament field (eight teams, eight regions) in March. UNK and the MIAA are in the Central Region.

The rankings will be released every Wednesday afternoon with the “Selection Show” being held on Sunday, March 11. The national polls have no bearing on the regional rankings.

The Lopers (24-3 overall; 17-2 in MIAA), ranked 10th in both national polls this week, has a tough finish to the regular season as it tangles with Missouri Southern (21-5), Pittsburg State (19-5) and Fort Hays State (19-8). However, the games will boost UNK’s strength of schedule.

HUSKER SOFTBALL READY FOR CLEARWATER INVITE CHALLENGE:

The Nebraska softball team (4-1) is set to face four top-eight teams and one that is receiving votes at the TaxAct Clearwater Invitational this weekend, Feb. 16-19. After opening the season 4-1, the Huskers are receiving votes in both the USA Today/NFCA D1 Top 25 and the ESPN/Team USA Coaches Polls.

The Big Red will open with No. 5 Oklahoma State (3-1) today at 3 PM. After game one, the Huskers take on No. 2 UCLA (7-0) at 6 PM.

On Friday, the Big Red will take on No. 8 Virginia Tech (5-0) with first pitch at 3 p.m. (CT). The matchup will be broadcasted live on the ACC Network.

The Huskers will face Texas A&M, who is receiving votes, on Saturday, Feb. 17. Nebraska will close out the weekend on Sunday, taking on No. 4 Arkansas (5-0) at 8:30 a.m. (CT)

STATE SOFTBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS MOVED TO UNO, LEAVES HASTINGS:

NEBRASKA STATE BASEBALL AND SOFTBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS TO BE TELEVISED:

Beginning this year, Nebraska Public Media is set to televise the NSAA Baseball and Softball Championship Final Games. A change in the format of the championship bracket in both baseball and softball allows for this television coverage.
