NEBRASKA MEN BEGIN CONFERENCE PLAY AT MINNESOTA:

The Nebraska men’s basketball team hits the road for the first time this season, as the Huskers travel to Minnesota Wednesday evening. Tipoff from Williams Arena in Minneapolis is set for shortly after 8 p.m.

Wednesday’s game is the first of two Big Ten games this week for the Huskers, as conference play started on Dec. 1 and goes throughout the week before resuming in January.  Nebraska’s other Big Ten matchup will be on Sunday when the Huskers take on Michigan State.

The Huskers (7-1) look to rebound following a loss to No. 15 Creighton on Sunday afternoon. Minnesota (5-3, 0-1) comes off an 84-74 loss at Ohio State on Sunday night.

KGFW’s pregame begins at 7 PM after a shortened Sports Nightly.

SIMS EXPECTED TO TRANSFER FROM HUSKERS:

Nebraska quarterback Jeff Sims is expected to enter the transfer portal..

Sims’ time at Nebraska ended after a trying season between the lines, bogged down by turnovers and an injury against Colorado in the second game of the season.

The 6-foot-4, 220-pound junior played in five games with two starts for the Huskers this season, going 28-of-47 through the air for 282 yards and one touchdown. Sims also added 42 rushes for 189 yards with one touchdown.

Sims’ time with the Huskers was plagued with turnovers. He threw six interceptions on the season — three in Nebraska’s season-opening loss to Minnesota, and two more in Nebraska’s late-season loss to Maryland. Sims also lost four fumbles on the season.

Sims will have one season of eligibility remaining at his next stop.

NCAA PROPOSES RULE TO ALLOW SCHOOLS, ATHLETES TO ENTER NIL DEALS:

NCAA president Charlie Baker proposed rule changes Tuesday that would allow Division I schools for the first time to pay their athletes in ways that are not tied to educational resources.

Baker shared the proposed changes in a letter sent to member schools. If Division I schools choose to adopt the rules, they would be allowed to enter into name, image and likeness deals directly with their athletes. The new rules would also create a trust fund for athletes at the richest tier of athletic departments and allow each of those schools to create its own set of rules for recruiting, transfers, roster size and a wide range of other policies.

The proposed new model would require schools in the top tier to set aside at least $30,000 per year for at least half of their athletes in “an enhanced educational trust fund.”
