LINCOLN – According to numerous outlets Texas A&M is expected to hire Nebraska athletics director Trev Alberts to the same position with that university. Alberts would replace Ross Bjork, who is set to become Ohio State’s athletics director following Gene Smith’s retirement.
A College Football Hall of Famer, Alberts was one of the most decorated players in Cornhuskers football history. He was a unanimous All-American, he won the Butkus Award and he was the 5th pick in the 1994 draft by the Indianapolis Colts and has his No. 34 retired by the program.
Alberts became the University of Nebraska-Omaha Athletic Director in 2009. In 2011, Alberts he made big news by cutting UNO’S football and national-championship wrestling programs to move the school from Division II to Division I. Today’s news comes nearly thirteen years to the date after that much-debated cut.
Alberts took over at Nebraska in 2021 and fired head football coach Scott Frost and then hired Matt Rhule following 2022 season.
Alberts had recently signed an extension under previous University President Ted Carter, paying him $1.7 million this year and next, with a jump to $2.1 million in 2026 and runs through Aug. 31, 2031. Alberts reportedly will owe Nebraska a $4.12 million buyout to get out of the deal.
