GRAND ISLAND – The Grand Island Public Library, Grand Island Women’s Club, Hall County Historical Society, Stuhr Museum, and YWCA of Grand Island had the inaugural Hall County Women’s History Walk on Saturday, March 16 at the Hargis House located at 1109 W. 2nd St. in Grand Island.
Over the past 150 years, Hall County has been the home of many remarkable women who made an impact on the community and beyond. In celebration of Women’s History Month, the program partners selected Hall County women to be recognized who met one (or more) of the following criteria:
• Broke barriers, challenged social norms, or paved the way for others.
• Made significant achievements in their chosen field.
• Served as leaders in community building activities or organizations.
• Made a positive impact in Hall County through philanthropy or social causes.
• Demonstrated resilience in the face of challenges and adversity.
• Played a crucial role in historical events or activities that have had a lasting impact.
The women who were recognized during the inaugural Hall County Women’s History Walk were:
• Edith and Grace Abbott – Social Justice Pioneers
• Sabra Abbott – Educator and Librarian
• Irene Abernethy – Political Trailblazer
• Mae Clark – Record Setting School Administrator
• Marval Hornady – Businesswoman and Community Advocate
• Mertie Johnson – Military Healthcare Pioneer
• Bobbie Lawrey – Champion of Reading, Libraries, and Kids
• Evelyn Ryan – Civic and Cultural Leader
• Jan Thayer – Healthcare and Senior Living Advocate
• Susan Wiese – Education and Voting Rights Advocate
