KEARNEY — The Kearney Volunteer Fire Department responded to a structure fire during the early morning hours of Tuesday, June 17.

The KVFD was dispatched to 1822 6th Ave. at 3:31 a.m. for the report of a structure fire. They would respond with 33 firefighters, two engines, one ladder apparatus and one utility vehicle.

Arriving on scene, the KVFD observed a fire on the backside of the home and initiated a fire attack on the exterior of the home where the bulk of fire was located. Crews also entered the structure and completed a search to confirm that all the occupants had evacuated the structure.

Firefighters found an extension of the fire into the second-floor bedroom and extinguished it.

No injuries were reported, and the fire was determined under control at 4:20 a.m.

The State Fire Marshal was requested to assist with the fire origin and cause investigation. The case remains under investigation, but the preliminary investigation indicated the fire was accidental and likely caused by embers from a fire pit.

The other agencies that assisted on scene included the Kearney Police Department, Buffalo County Sheriff’s Office, CHI Health Good Samaritan EMS, Nebraska Public Power District and Northwestern Energy.
