FORMER BEARCAT SORENSON TO COMPETE IN EUGENE FOR TEAM USA:

Former Kearney High Bearcat and current high jumper for the UNK Track & Field team Brayden Sorensen has been invited to compete in the USA Track and Field championships this week, Thursday through Saturday, in Eugene, Oregon.

Sorensen jumped 7 feet and ½ inch this year during his outdoor season with the Lopers. His jump did not qualify for the automatic qualifying standard, but applied for other additional qualifying bids.

Sorensen, a three-time All-American, was the runner-up at the 2021 NCAA Division II Indoor National Championships and finished third at the 2021 outdoor meet and the 2022 indoor meet.

NEBRASKA VOLLEYBALL LANDS TOP TEN PROSPECT:

Nebraska volleyball continues to bring in some of the nation’s best recruits year in and year out.

On Sunday head coach John Cook and staff landed a commitment from a consensus top 10 player in the country in Skyler Pierce. Pierce is an incoming high school junior in the class of 2024.

She is considered the No. 1 player in the country in the 2024 class according to PrepDig and the No. 9 ranked player according to PrepVolleyball.

In her sophomore season at Olathe Northwest in Kansas Pierce averaged 4.3 kills and 3.5 digs per contest.

HUSKER WOMEN’S HOOPS RECEIVE COMMITMENT FROM TOP MISSOURI PROSPECT:

The Nebraska women’s basketball team received a late Friday night commitment from a 6-foot-2 forward with a list of Power Five offers.

Natalie Potts, a senior-to-be at Incarnate Word (Missouri) High School, announced her pledge to the Huskers via social media.

Potts visited Lincoln in October. Her other offers included Creighton, Illinois, Michigan, among others.

This past season, she averaged 19.3 points and 8.6 rebounds to lead Incarnate Word to its fifth straight state title.

Potts joins guard Logan Nissley (Bismarck, North Dakota) in NU’s 2023 class.

KEARNEY STUDENTS RETURN TO HIGH SCHOOL BASS FISHING NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP:

Kearney’s Austen Madsen and Logan Greeno are returning to the High School Bass Fishing National Championship.

The duo will represent Nebraska for the second straight year after winning the The Bass Federation trail championship.

Madsen and Greeno won tournaments at Harlan County Reservoir and Elwood Reservoir and finished third at Lake McConaughy and Lewis and Clark Lake. They caught their limit of five fish at McConaughy and Lewis and Clark and caught four, and bigger, fish at Harlan and Elwood.

The National High School Championships are Wednesday through Saturday at Pickwick Lake near Florence, Ala.

Last year at Lake Hartwell in South Carolina, Greeno and Madsen reached the semifinal round of the tournament before being eliminated. They caught their limit every day. Only 10 teams advance to the finals.

FITZPATRICK WINS US OPEN:

Englishman Matt Fitzpatrick won the U.S. Open on Sunday, winning his first major on the same course where he took the U.S. Amateur title nine years earlier.

Fitzpatrick shot a 2-under 68 at The Country Club to finish the tournament at 6-under 274 and beat Will Zalatoris and Scottie Scheffler by one.

Fitzpatrick became the first Englishman to win the U.S. Open since Justin Rose at Merion in 2013
