KEARNEY FOOTBALL READIES FOR POSTSEASON AFTER NORFOLK WIN:
The Kearney High Football team crushed Norfolk’s postseason goals early, opening up the passing attack for four Treyven Beckman touchdown tosses as the Bearcats dismantled the Panthers on the road 34-10 Friday night.
Kearney appears settled into the #5 seed in the Class A playoffs, securing a home contest for the first round of the postseason. The Bearcats likely match up with #12 Millard South.
LOPER VOLLEYBALL STUNNED AT HOME AGAINST UCM:
The 26th-ranked Central Missouri Jennies rallied to win the opening set and got hot late to down sixth-ranked Nebraska Kearney in five sets Friday night at the Health & Sports Center.
UCM (15-8, 10-4) keeps its NCAA Tournament hopes alive and stops the Lopers (22-3, 12-3) five-match win streak. The Jens are 3-2 vs. UNK over the last two years.
The Lopers are now in a tie for first place in the MIAA standings with 13th-ranked Northwest Missouri State (18-5). The Bearcats downed Missouri Southern in four sets tonight and host UNK next Saturday afternoon.
KEARNEY ENDS STATE CROSS COUNTRY IN EIGHTH:
The Kearney Girls cross country team wrapped up their season in eighth place at the State Cross Country meet at the Kearney Country Club Friday afternoon.
The Bearcats finished in 8th place with freshman Claire Karjalainen placing 11th, Samantha Stava in 15th, and Darin Brockmeier and Olivia Gaasch finishing 36th and 38th respectively.
HUSKER VOLLEYBALL SET TO BATTLE ILLINOIS:
The No. 3 Nebraska volleyball team continues its three-match road stretch when it takes on Illinois on Saturday at 6 p.m. at Huff Hall in Champaign. The Huskers are in the midst of playing three straight road matches and seven of nine overall away from home over a span of five weeks.
Nebraska (17-1, 9-0 Big Ten) is riding a 10-match win streak and is the only Big Ten team without a conference loss heading into match No. 10 of the 20-match schedule. Nebraska’s 17-1 start to the season is its best since 2016, when the Big Red went 26-1 before a Nov. 23 loss at Minnesota.
Illinois enters Saturday’s match at 9-10 overall and 4-5 in the Big Ten after a 3-0 loss at No. 6 Ohio State on Wednesday night. The Fighting Illini opened Big Ten play with wins over Maryland and Northwestern, but they’ve gone 2-5 since then with all five losses to teams ranked in the top 15 of the AVCA Coaches Poll.
MARKOWSKI ADDED TO AWARD WATCH LIST:
Nebraska center Alexis Markowski was honored Friday as one of 20 candidates nationally on the 2023 Lisa Leslie Award Watch List.

Markowski made an instant impact in her first season at Nebraska in 2021-22. The 6-2 center out of Lincoln Pius X High School was the Big Ten Freshman of the Year and earned second-team All-Big Ten honors after averaging 12.8 points and a team-best 8.0 rebounds.
STORM FALL TO MUSKETEERS:
The Tri-City Storm dropped a road game to the Sioux City Musketeers by a final score of 5-2 Friday night at the Tyson Events Center. Trevor Connelly and Seth Constance scored for the Storm in the loss.
