November 9 – Winter Weather Awareness Day for Nebraska
From the National Weather Service Hastings – Mike Moritz
Despite many areas receiving at least some snow a week or so ago, it really hasn’t felt much like winter recently, and probably won’t for at least a week or two. However, winter is coming and it will bring all the snow, cold, wind and ice along for the ride.
Thursday, November 9 has been designated as Winter Weather Awareness Day for Nebraska. It’s a day when people across the state can learn a little more about the winter ahead, and refresh themselves with regards to safe and effective winter weather preparation. The National Weather Service (NWS) offices across the state of Nebraska have composed a winter weather packet of information about the winter impacts across Nebraska, including information about the winter outlook, the Winter Storm Severity Index, safety, traveler and contact information. The winter weather information packet is available at this link.
We know it’s hard to think of winter weather when temperatures are in the 50s, 60s and 70s. However, taking just a moment to refresh oneself with some of the potential hazards ahead and how to mitigate them can pay dividends in the long run. The NWS hopes all Nebraskans will take just a little bit of time this week to think ahead, so as to be ready when winter really does strike.
