BUFFALO, NY – The AFC and NFC Championship games are officially set for Sunday, Jan. 28 as the top seeds in both conferences advanced and will host their respective third seeds for the right to head to Super Bowl LVIII.
The top-rated Baltimore Ravens handled the upstart Houston Texans in a 34-10 victory, not allowing an offensive touchdown and ultimately shutting down rising star quarterback CJ Stroud.
The NFC’s leading team, the San Francisco 49ers, escaped near catastrophe as the top team from the Bay Area trailed the seventh-seeded Green Bay Packers into the final stages of the fourth quarter. A Christian McCaffery touchdown run put the Niners up, as a late interception sealed the game with the 24-21 win.
Sunday’s action had back-and-forth battles in Detroit and Buffalo, as the Lions held a firm two touchdown lead in the final period and held off Tampa Bay for a 31-23 victory. It is the first NFC Championship contest for Detroit since 1991, one of the longest droughts in NFL history.
The defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs looked more to their regular high-powered version, as Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce connected on two touchdowns early against the No. 2 seeded Buffalo Bills. The Bills aimed to play spoiler, trading leads five times in the opening three quarters before being shutout in the fourth quarter. A late drive stalled late in Chiefs territory, as Tyler Bass’ field goal to tie the game ended up wide right – nearly 33 years to the day of the infamous Scott Norwood “wide right” miss against the New York Giants in the 1991 Super Bowl. The Chiefs would move on, closing out the 27-24 victory.
Sunday’s contests are set in San Francisco and Baltimore with a win guaranteeing a spot in the upcoming Super Bowl in Houston, Tex. on Sunday, Feb. 11. The AFC Championship game takes place at 2 PM on CBS, while the NFC Championship game begins at 5:30 PM on FOX.
