What My Mother Means to Me
By Rowan Miller
My mother will always care for me and will always be near. She works with me on things that I’m not good at and teaches me new things. She is a kind and good-hearted person who wants to help all she can. Whenever you feel bad, she will embrace you into a sweet-smelling hug. My mother will always be a part of my family and can always be trusted with things. If you could bottle up the feeling when you hug her, everyone in the world would be happy and peaceful. She will come when trouble is near and will try to do everything in her power to stop it. When she smiles, you will feel like you can do anything in the universe. I’m lucky to be her son, and I hope she feels the same about me. What a great mother I have.

Windy Hills Elementary 5th-grade students participated in the essay contest. The students who participated in the contest were judged against other students from within the state. The “top ten” students and essays from the state are invited to attend a ceremony at the State Capital in Lincoln to read their essays. The first-place winner will be announced at that time and forwarded to compete in the national contest. The first-place national winner will have the opportunity to go to Washington DC.
The contest was judged on how well the essay portrays the writer’s mother, the organization of the essay, how creatively words are used, how well the writer says what is intended, and the use of rules of writing, spelling, punctuation, and grammar. The essays were selected by a team of judges.
