KEARNEY — The Nebraska Department of Transportation will be implementing new left-turn lane signals at the intersection of Highway 30 and 30th Avenue sometime in the near future.
At the moment, Highway 30 traffic currently does not have dedicated left turn-lane signals for east-west traffic wanting to turn left.
The City of Kearney has been discussing this complaint with the Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) ever since the new high school opened, Kearney Public Schools noted.
The signal head types that are going to be installed are the 4-section flashing yellow arrow (FYA) type, similar to what was installed near Meadowlark Elementary last year at 56th Street & Avenue N.
This is the new standard for left-turn lanes, in lieu of the traditional 5-section signal head you see at many intersections around Kearney.
The 30th Avenue traffic (north-south) already has traditional 5-section heads, and they will also be getting changed over to the 4-section FYA type heads so that the intersection is consistent in all directions.
NDOT crews were working on the traffic signals with lanes closed on Highway 30 on Wednesday, March 6.
