Two weeks ago with the debut of Taylor Swift’s album Midnights we find she scored another record with 10 songs in the Top 10. The last to do this was Drake who had 9 songs in the Top Ten. Then when you go back into history of the top 100 music charts you will see The Beatles had 5 songs in the Top 10 back in April 1964. While these records are impressive, to compare what the Beatles did back in 1964 and what Taylor or Drake for that matter have achieved in the 21st Century is Apples to Oranges! Today when an album is released online via streaming platforms like Spotify or iTunes and all the individual songs from the album available to listen too or download immediately is a lot different than producing a 45 single in 1964. The Beatles record of 5 singles in the Top 10 meant that fans had to go out and purchased individual singles. These records had to be recorded, produced, manufactured, pressed and transported to record stores in numerous store locations around the country. That is a lot of work and I remember that world. Getting music wasn’t always instant, especially if you were a member of Columbia House and would spend like one cent to by 11 Cassettes with the requirement you buy 2 to 3 other albums/cassettes at regular prices in a calendar year. You had to wait sometimes two weeks or more to get your music. So while I applaud Taylor’s new record, I still think the Beatles feat is more impressive.
